Postcard. Victorians' Vision of The Future in a Steampunk-Style Horseless Carriage Victorian ingenuity at work -- an artist's rendition of the future in a steampunk car. The horseless carriage would be three-wheeled, and the driver would sit outside, atop the back, just like their old buggies in the 1800s. The single very bright light in this steampunk vehicle would light the way. The modernistic light would have to be bright enough to see people on bicycles, and make everything in front of the horseless carriage bright as day. It might have been obvious to the Victorian steampunk creator back then, but we have to ask, where is the motor? Since this was an ad for cacao sucard (chocolate sugar), would it be powered by coco sugar? Postcard. Victorian eye - optical advertisement Eyes were great advertisements for advertising art from opticians in the Victorian era -- and this one is a beautiful black ink illustration of an eye advertisement and curly Vintage writing, reminiscent of the days of old westerns and vintage eye doctors. The background is aged brown paper. The advertisement says, "California Optical Co., Scientific & Strictly Reliable, Manufacturing Opticians". There's an antique sunburst around the eye, and the swirly letters circle the eye as well. The vintage eye advertising is a great addition to gifts for people who love old-fashioned advertising art. Postcard. Vintage Mermaids Swimming in Waves A very old antique illustration of Victorian mermaids swimming in the waves with a young mermaid swimming alongside. The mer-baby seems to be quite a little fish! The mermaid style is quite Art Nouveau, which is French for New Art, popular between 1890 to 1910. Art Nouveau typically portrayed beautiful women with long hair, and inspired by natural forms such as plants and curved lines. About Vintage Mermaid Illustration We found this wonderful vintage mermaid illustration in an old picture book from 1896. The image was done in black and white - pen and ink, and was colorized. The image is typical of the era -- the Victorian people loved fantasy creatures, and mermaids were very interesting to them. They wrote quite a lot about mermaids and merbabies in their fantasy genre.
